One of the most exciting and invigorating bands in the Chicago independent underground today, taking over where bands like Big Black, Jesus Lizard, Tar and Pegboy left off, it?s gritty post punk that?s dangerous, not predictable. HAYMARKET RIOT master in intense dynamics, complex arrangements and pristine detail. A sense of angular song structure and sterling technique, mixed with aggro tendencies exemplify their driving sound.
Haymarket Riot members, including Kevin J. Frank (vocals, guitar), Fred Popolo (bass, vocals), Chris Daly (guitar) and Shane Hochstetler (drums), are planning to take their antics, musical and otherwise, to Europe, Japan and North America in 2004 to support their upcoming recording ?Mog?, a split release on THICK and Divot. In November 2003, Haymarket Riot had the opportunity to record with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago, Ill. With Albini engineering and John Congleton (of the Paperchase) producing, ?Mog? may be the band?s best effort since its 1999 inception. The album was recorded in five days and is probably the closest the band has ever come to doing a live recording in a studio. ?Steve was able to extract the no-frills, balls-out, rock sound we were looking for, while John pushed us to give our best musical performances…without the use of violence,? stated Kevin J. Band culto del cosiddetto slow-core. Immaginate un rock narcolettico tenue, diradato e desolato, in bilico tra Leonard Cohen, Codeine e Seam. Il primo disco risale al 1993, quando due trentenni, Jeff Martin e John Berry (chitarrista e batterista) pubblicano il primo 45 giri, Skyscrape (Ringers Lactate), una ninnananna angelica che si dipana lentamente, come una crisalide che esca assonnata dal bozzolo. Altri gioielli del loro repertorio vengono messi in circolazione dall’EP The Palms (Quigley, 1993), in particolare Creep, che immerge la sua lipemania in una tempesta di feedback, e You Are There, ballata notturna e solitaria come neppure Tom Waits ne ha mai fatte. L’album Year After Year (Quigley, 1993), destinato a rimanere il loro capolavoro, e` caratterizzato da testi iper-realisti che fotografano scene di tutti i giorni, apparentemente di nessun interesse, in realta’ metafore per la disperata alienazione nella metropoli. I salmi degli Idaho, propulsi da accordi che sono lividi, da ritmi che sono bubboni, incorrono in continue allucinazioni (Gone, gli ultimi momenti di un morente), soffocano in claustrofobie timbriche (The Only Road), lambiscono depressioni suicide (Sundown), precipitano in abissi di assoluta anemia (God’s Green Earth). Gli ultimi cinque minuti della lunga End Game sono di puro silenzio. Sono odi alla marginalita’ sociale, e non a caso talvolta (Memorial Day) si situano al confine con le elegie piu’ sommesse di Lou Reed. Non esiste redenzione in questo mondo di sole sconfitte, ma una qualche forma di serenita’ o rassegnazione viene adombrata in Save. Martin e Berry sono poeti dell’effimero, delle chimere, della dissolvenza, del vuoto, del nulla, del riflesso di un fantasma nella nebbia dell’aurora. La loro musica, compressa fra “gloom” e “doom”, fra Neil Young e Nick Drake, non esiste. Arrivano al 2002 con “we were young and needed the money” titolo autoronico, che celebra i 10 anni di attività della band con una raccolta di inediti e B-sides, per fan di Pavement e/o Radiohead.

Il parigino Hypo (al secolo Anthony Keyeux) è l’inventore di un suono volutamente eterogeneo, elegante ed allo stesso tempo di facile presa pop. Autore di tre album incredibilmente coinvolgenti, Hypo compone brani che potrebbero davvero diventare dei perfetti singoli radiofonici dal retroterra indie e dal beat electro.
Hypo – Random Veneziano – Active Suspension / Risonanza magnetica – 2004 – CD ”Random Veneziano” è il terzo disco del parigino Anthony Keyeux, pubblicato ancora una volta dall’inarrestabile Active Suspension. Volutamente eterogeneo, elegante ed allo stesso tempo di facile presa pop, il disco si discosta da ”Karaoke A Capella”, per di più privandosi delle collaborazioni che avevano caratterizzato il precedente lavoro. Il fatto è che ”Random Veneziano” è incredibilmente coinvolgente, melodicamente entusiasmante e ritmicamente concitato; ”Free Days” e ”Mambotutu” potrebbero davvero diventare dei perfetti singoli radiofonici dal retroterra indie ma dal beat electro, decisamente impreziositi dalla voce di Emmanuelle de Héricourt; le tastiere di ”Serpentinouze” illuminano la traccia di colori naif, gli sbandamenti di ”Relax Max Msp” strapazzano il brano alla maniera di O.Lamm, ma è il disco nel suo complesso a riservare innumerevoli sorprese ed un ascolto assolutamente curioso e piacevolissimo. Da premiare. dDAMAGE They are 2 French brothers Jean-Baptiste and Frederic Hanak from Paris. Despite their persistant emails I really enjoyed their demo(s) and the fruit of these labours is “Radio Ape”, their third album. I don’t know how to describe their sound really. Its woozyness reminds me of Capitol K’s first album, and there are electric basses, vocals and guitars plus a distorted production ethic which brings to mind MBM.
