NOVITA’/ NEWS
VITIELLO, STEPHEN
Scratchy Marimba
Scanner
(harmonizer, taped voices, nonchè produttore esecutivo..), Dean Sharp
paesaggi elettroacustici.

HUNT, JERRY
Phalba
Composer and modern day shaman Jerry Hunt combined live electronics with
esoteric spirituality in creating his own very unique ritualistic
performances. This CD presents four rare compositions written expressly for
James Fulkerson and the Barton Workshop, who had a long and intimate
relationship with this elusive composer until his untimely death in 1993.
Includes an extended piece for trombone and electronics, two colorful compositions for ensemble and a charming minimalist piece for violin and
piano. Hunt’s hypnotic sound world transfers brilliantly to this virtuosic
ensemble, and they perform his challenging scores with passion and
intensity. A wild new view from one of new music’s legendary mavericks.

BRAZELTON, KITTY & NAPHTALI, DAFNA
What Is It Like To Be A Bat?
Kitty Brazelton has been a mover and shaker in the downtown scene for well
over a decade; a singer, bandleader and composer of striking originality.
Along with Dafna Naphtali, she performs two extended suites of twisted,
powerful chamber rock blending a raucous punk aesthetic with vocal
harmonies, noise and much, much more. Complex, visionary weirdness from two
of the strangest minds in contemporary music.
CD; Tzadik; EU 18,50
APPLEBAUM, MARK
Catfish
A former student of Brian Ferneyhough, Mark Applebaum straddles the two
worlds of modern classical complexity and improvisational insanity. As one
would expect, this first CD devoted to his work is an eclectic compendium
of
homemade electro-percussion, orchestral fireworks, virtuoso solo pieces and
cartoon cut-ups. Intense, but always with a sick Californian sense of
humor,
Catfish is a vexing and delightful listening experience.

MILESI, PIERO
Within Himself
Graditissimo e grandissimo ritorno per Piero Milesi. Il CD raccoglie brani
nati per diversi contesti (sonorizzazioni, commenti sonori…) ma tutti su
eccellenti livelli creativi. Splendido l’incedere della conclusiva “Fuochi
sul Tevere”.

NEUHAUS, MAX
Zyklus – Four realizations of Karlheinz Stockhausen
Zyklus was written in 1959 and is one of the first solo pieces to utilize
such a large nember of percussion instruments (twenty one). When Neuhaus
first started to play this piece there were only three percussionists in
the
world who could play it. Stockhausen’s idea was that a performer would play
the piece spontaneosly, making its complex decisions n the fly. No one
played it this way; it was too difficult. Everyone wrote out his own
version
of the score and played from it. Coming from the world of jazz Neuhaus
decided he wanted to take up the challenge of playing it spontaneously. At
that time percussionists generally played only one instrument at a time.
Playing twenty one siultaneously was unheard of. Neuhaus quickly realized
that the only way to do it, in fact, was to think of all them together as
just one instrument, one multi-surfaced bank of timbre.
Neuhaus decided to travel to Europe and go to Darmstadt where Stockhausen
was teaching. He wanted to talk to him about the piece. Stockhausen was
interested in the idea that the twenty one instruments had to be physically
formed into one instrument and that so much work had been done already. So
he offered Neuhaus the big opportunity to perform Zyklus on the first
American tour.
Stockhausen came over to New York to hear Neuhaus play, but he wasn’t
satisfied with the improvisation version. It was too long. Neuhaus was
determined to teach himself how to do it for this tour. He had another six
months. He got down to seven minutes; and he was still improvising, not
writing it out. He was ready to play that piece, and played it like nobody
had ever heard it before.
Each of these four recorings is a document of a true solo performance, one
person and two hands, with no additional live help and no overdubbing. This
cd also offers four different kinds of beauty, four proofs that the
latitude
that Stockhausen allowed, when capitalized on by a performer with creative
imagination, could validate Stockhausen as a composer and an entire
aesthetec of freedom and control.
This edition includes a 12 pages booklet with original photos of both
official concerts and performances for invited audinces, Max Neuhaus’ own
comments on the original score and an editorial note by John Rockwell.
Digipack first press of 1000 copies.

NEUHAUS, MAX
The New York School – Nine realizations of Cage, Feldman, Brown
The term “New York School” refers to a circle of composers in the 1950’s
who
orbited around John Cage: Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Christian Wolff and
David Tudor above all. Their music paralleled the music and events of the
Fluxus group, and drew its name from the New York School of mostly Abstract
Expressionist painters who had got their start in the 40’s: Motherwell,
Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, Kline. What brought these artists together was
a faith in the liberation of the unconscious and an excitement drawn from
the street energies of Manhattan.
This compact disc offers multiple realizations by the solo percussionist
Max
Neuhaus of scores by three key members of the New York School: Earle Brown
(three realizations of “Four Systems – For Four Amplified Cymbals”,
recorded
between 1964 and 1968), Morton Feldman (three realizations of “King of
Denmark”, recorded between 1965 and 1968) and John Cage (one realization
’64
and two realization ’65 of 27’10.554″). All three composers conformed to
the
ethos of the 60’s, not to the blend of hippie mysticism and pop
commercialism that defined that decade towards its end, but to a broader
notion of personal liberation. In this context Max Neuhaus was allowed to
express himself, to revel in timbral color (including the use of
electronics, as in the amplification of the cymbals in the Brown
performances, or in the use of a FM tuner, of a self-built electronic
mini-instrumet or of a tape with concrete sounds in the Cage performaces)
and in giddy dialogues between notated compositional intention and
performed
expression. Each of the realizations on this disc is a valid response to
the
scores, yet each is different, almost a new piece of music.
This edition includes a 16 pages booklet with original photos and concert
programs, Max Neuhaus’ own comments on the original scores, an editorial
note by John Rockwell, reviews by Malcolm Goldstein and Theodore Strongin.
Digipack first press of 1000 copies.

PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE
Godbear / Jamaica Heinekens in Brooklyn
Originally released on the Barooni label and sold out since a long time.
Charlemagne Palestine and Alga Marghen have decided to make the two cds
available in a new 2cd set edition. The cds are a new print of the original
ones, both included in a newly designed slipcase.
Godbear. Flying. In the stratosphere of the overtones. Turn out the lights.
Close your eyes. Trance out. Into SONORAMAGNIFICATALAND. Pushed by Remy
Martin cognac, the piano would replay the encoded performances exactly in
three parts. “Strumming”. “Lower Depths”. “Timbral Assault”. A
re-evaluation
of work from the seventies, recorded in the eighties, released in the late
nineties and available on CP Records now. A long fuckin’ journey, don’t cha
think? Nuf said!
Jamaica Heinekens in Brooklyn. Charlemagne Palestine recordings on the 5th
of September 1997, on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, of the Jamaice Day
Parade. With a small Sony DAT player and a small stereo microphone,
Palestine walked throughout the festival very slowly for several hours to
let the ambient sounds of each block naturally change in real time. The 60+
minutes segment on this record is played without any editing. Superimposed
upon this extract Palestine has composed three series of drone textures for
Yamaha organs, 16 Serge & Rubery oscillators with bandpass filtering, and a
thick Arp Synthesizer texture using oscillators, filters and other sound
modulation devices. All together this work creates a dialogue between pure
and mixed electronics and the real-time ambient sounds of a traditional
urban ethnographic popular festival. Edition of 500 copies.

GUACCERO, DOMENICO
Rot(1971-73)
WITH ELETTRONICA VIVA (ALVIN CURRAN, M. HIRAYAMA, W. BRANCHI)
“This provocative and very ‘advanced’ multi-media work, was conceived from
the beginning to include purely notated music, improvised music, and
recorded music on tape which the composer could manipulate, redesign and
remix (long before that concept existed) and create yet another layer, or
sonic strata with those sounds.” (Alvin Curran)
The electroacoustic parts of ROT are now available for the first time ever
in a limited vinyl LP edition (350 copies), with a gatefold wallet cover,
silver foil design on silver, diecut letters, custom inner sleeve and a
4-page booklet in English and Italian. The second piece on the LP (CMPSZN
2), for eight treated pianos, is a powerful and mesmerizing
concrete/electroacoustic piece that takes to the limits the sonic
possibilities of the instrument, but still remaining “musical” and highly
enjoyable.”

GUACCERO, DOMENICO
Da Cantare – Vocal Works 1957-1983
“This important double CD box edition is the ultimate collection of the
vocal compositions by one of the leading figures of Italian contemporary
and
aleatory music. The first piece ? ROT ? is the complete version of the
piece
originally written in 1973, as the vocal parts have been added in July 2004
for its 2nd performance ever, held in Rome during the celebration of the
“Guaccero’year”. It is therefore different from the piece presented on the
LP, which is pure electronics and percussion stripped by any vocal part.
The 2 CDs contains many extraordinary works, the majority of which has
never
been released before: a unique occasion to hear the lost voice of one of
the
most important musicians of the Italian avant garde scene of the 60s-70s.
The CD Box is printed in silver foil on white matt cardboard, and contains
a
comprehensive 24-page booklet in English and Italian.”

Les 120 Jours
Musique concrete composed in 1997/98 for the Festival Musique Action in
Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy . A collaboration between these three French
composers.
First they collected a bank of sounds, which they reworked and transformed
using their own style and techniques. At the end all the parts were

KOSUGI, TAKEHISA
Catch Wave

DOYLE, ROGER
Rapid Eye Movements
This CD contains 4 works composed by Roger Doyle between 1968 and 1980,
remastered in 2002. The earliest piece is the Piano Suite, composed when he
was 19/20, and the latest Rapid Eye Movements, his attempt at a
‘masterpiece
before the age of thirty’. Upon its initial release in 1981, the UK Sounds
magazine wrote: ‘without doubt one of the most exhilerating LPs and
unorthodox concepts ever submitted to vinyl’.
