Fortuna Pop Records News

F-POP! Propaganda September. Click For Infos.

Is it really 4 weeks since the last Beat Hotel at the Buffalo Bar? Wow.
We’re looking forward to being back there this Friday when Sheffield’s
Monkey Swallows The Universe bring their fantastic brand of folk-pop to
town. They’ve been compared to everyone from Camera Obscura to Belle &
Sebastian, Bright Eyes, Nick Drake, PJ Harvey, Mazzy Star and The
Sundays, but they’re much better than all those chancers. No pressure
guys! 🙂 Support is from our very own Fanfarlo, the very jangly
Pocketbooks and the vintage folk of the Mary Epworth Band. Plus of
course the best disco in town afterwards with everything from indiepop
to 60s psych, northern soul to punk rock, all for £4!

Since the last Beat Hotel we have of course celebrated our 10th
birthday with what were a brilliant few nights at the Luminaire for
F-POP!FEST. There are interviews with some of the bands involved and
reviews of the gigs on the ever excellent tangents website
www.tangents.co.uk Twee? You looking at me punk?

Plus we have a bunch of new records for sale, including the excellent
new album by Australian duo Sodastream, described by Maverick magazine
as “a rare blend of comfort and hurt, and highly recommended”, and the
new single by Fanfarlo on limited green 7″, pinned by SoundsXP as “a
gorgeous soothing ballad with doleful vocals and chiming synth sounding
like a bedroom Arcade Fire.. sure to bring a ray of light to the
darkest of corners”. So if you don’t live in London and can’t make the
gigs just scroll down to the bottom to get your vinyl and cd kicks.

MONKEY SWALLOWS THE UNIVERSE Monkey Swallows the Universe are an
acoustic indiepop band from Sheffield, centred around the original
founding duo of Nat Johnson & Kevin Gori, who formed the band in 2004.
The band expanded in 2005 to include Catherine Tully on violin, Andy
George on cello & Rob Dean on drums. In February 2006 the band released
their debut album ‘The Bright Carvings’, on the independent record
label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation and released a single
with Thee SPC in July 2006. The band have supported Mercury-nominated
Richard Hawley and Camera Obscura on tour. They have performed sessions
on both BBC Radio 6 and XFM. They have been variously described as
“something special” (Stylus Magazine), “big big news” (Rough Trade) and
“boss” (Richard Hawley.). www.mstu.co.uk www.myspace.com/mstu

FANFARLO Last year the then 23-year-old Simon Aurell left his native
Sweden and moved to London, armed only with a headful of songs and a
laptop on which to record them. A cdr of 4 songs was duly produced and
as Simon sold or gave them away people began to sit up and take notice.
A band was assembled with country music aficionado Justin Finch (bass)
and multi-instrumentalist Leon Beckenham (Keys, Trumpet). Gigs
followed, including prestigious support slots for Guillemots,
Semifinalists and Love Is All, for promoters as diverse as White Heat
and How Does It Feel To To Be Loved? (to whose compilation album they
also contributed a track), and in places as far away as New Zealand.
Influenced by The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Pavement, Neutral Milk
Hotel and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! the band release their debut single
on Fortuna POP! this month with an album to follow in the new year.
This is fall in love, take no prisoners pop at its very best. They’re
out for your heart. Get ready to have it stolen.
“One of the most affecting songs I’ve heard this year, like a more
scaled-down, vulnerable Arcade Fire with achingly mournful vocals.”

POCKETBOOKS Pocketbooks are an indiepop band from London, with a
fondness for handclaps, harmonies and jangly guitars. The band appear
on the new How Does It Feel To Be Loved? compilation and played their
first gig in July 2006. Think Camera Obscura, The Pastels, Belle and
Sebastian, The Sundays and Tindersticks. www.myspace.com/pocketbooks

THE MARY EPWORTH BAND Mary Epworth writes music with roots in country
and folk, filtered through a love of sunshine pop, gypsy music and
psychedelia. The band have been compared to “a seafaring mazzy star”
and “like Kristin Hersh covering Johnny Cash” but most people say they
sound like “dark dark folk” Crazy Horse, The Band, Fairport, etc.

*** NEW RECORDS!! ***

Some brand spanking new records for you to order…

RESERVATIONS – SODASTREAM (CD ALBUM £10) The brilliant new album by the
Australian duo of Karl Smith and Pete Cohen, augmented here by a full
band. Darker in tone than their previous “A Minor Revival” album,
“Reservations” nevertheless has that mark of quality we’ve come to
expect from these guys, with Karl Smith’s amazing voice always a
highlight. For newcomers, think Low, Nick Drake and Will Oldham and
you’ll be halfway there.

TALKING BACKWARDS – FANFARLO (GREEN VINYL 7″ £2.50) The first release
from the wonderful Fanfarlo who’ve been making waves in London for a
while now. Led by 24 year old Swede Simon Aurell, this is a great,
driving pop single that anyone who loves The Arcade Fire will instantly
fall for. And it’s on green vinyl.

ORBIT AROUND YOU/IN A BLIZZARD IN A LIGHTHOUSE – THE BUTTERFLIES OF
LOVE (7″ £2.50) The return of everyone’s favourite super-tall
Americans. A double A-side, the single couples the Jeff Greene-penned
AM radio hit “Orbit Around You” with Dan Greene’s woozy, psychedelic
“In A Blizzard In A Lighthouse”, a tasty combination that is sure to
whet the appetite for the album to come, “Famous Problems”.

XS AND OS/SHE’LL BREAK YOUR HEART… AGAIN – THE LOVES (4 SONG 7″ EP
£2.50) Two choice cuts from The Loves forthcoming “Technicolour” album,
the super poppy “Xs and Os” and a re-recorded “She’ll Break Your
Heart… Again” sounding absolutely massive. Plus two other exclusive
tracks, “My Sweet Drunken Blues” and an Os Mutantes cover. Bostin’!

All three 7″s are limited to 500 copies, so be quick!
