Inutile dire che si tratta di copie uniche e quindi,, occorre correre! “With commentaries and responses from Richard Barrett, Christopher Fox, Brian Dennis, Anton Lukoszevieze, Michael Nyman, Eddie Prévost, David Ryan, Howard Skempton, Dave Smith, John Tilbury and Christian Wolff.
The English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936-81) was among the most adventurous, controversial and innovative musicians of his generation. After an initial association with Stockhausen and the European avantgarde, he became engaged with the aesthetic ideas of John Cage and the New York School. A leading figure in the experimental music of the 1960s, Cardew is widely acknowledged as a pioneer of indeterminacy, graphic notation, free improvisation and performer involvement. As well as extending the boundaries of music in unprecedented directions, he enquired deeply into its social relevance and meaning. His passionate and untiring quest for wider social significance led him eventually to become a political activist.
In the 1970s he repudiated his earlier experimental work and adopted a more traditional musical language. He joined a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist party and devoted himself to political action, at the same time searching for ways to express his commitment in musical terms. At the height of his political involvement he died tragically at the age of 45, killed by a hit-and-run driver near his home in East London.
This Reader brings together a diverse collection of Cardew’s major essays and writings from different stages of his career, together with commentaries by other writers associated with his work. It reflects developments, changes and contradictions in his thinking about music from the late 1950s to the end of his life. As a companion volume to John Tilbury’s biography — ‘Cornelius Cardew a life unfinished’, Copula, 2006 (ISBN 0 9525492 3 9) it provides essential material for the study of Cardew’s life and ideas; it also makes a significant contribution to discussion of the wider issues involved in the relationship between music, ideology and political commitment.

“Dol Amroth sostanzialmente è un incontro, o meglio il punto d’incontro tra estremi: l’ancestrale che si unisce ad un futuro possibile, l’improvvisazione mediata da un curato arrangiamento, il silenzio che irrompe sul rumore… E così che in Dol Amroth si possono trovare percussioni etniche dalle tipologie più disparate e antiche, accompagnate da sinth analogici e virtuali, didgeridoo suonati ed elaborati con le più moderne tecniche di modulazione sonora, chitarre classiche arpeggiate e looppate all’inverosimile. Il primo frutto di quest’incontro è The first lake, opera prima strumentale di Dol Amroth che di fatto oltrepassa il formato standard del brano musicale così come oggi concepito. All’interno dei brani è infatti assente ogni riferimento melodico e non esistono le strutture tipiche della musica pop. Il tutto è concepito come un unico flusso sonoro contraddistinto da un uso spinto e sistematico delle dinamiche. Si alternano infatti momenti piuttosto forti, scanditi da ritmiche tribali, a passaggi al limite del rumore bianco o, se vogliamo, del silenzio quasi assoluto. “Il comporre è atto manuale. Note scritte a penna sul pentagramma. Il gioco (o la sfida) è scrivere musica per musicisti in carne ed ossa – che suonano, faticano e si emozionano – e poi darla in pasto a un computer. In questo disco si assiste al rapporto uomo-macchina e digitale-analogico in un continuo rincorrersi, quasi un cercarsi, non potendo (forse) gli opposti restare privi l’uno dell’altro. Un processo continuo dall’atto della composizione al mastering finale. Nonostante l’uso della macchina il lavoro rimane artigianale. Non si lavora con lo stampo di fabbrica. NO.TURNO usa il bulino e la carta vetrata e ad ogni azione sulla materia si ferma, la guarda e le chiede consiglio. Per poi levigare ancora. “Alessandro Fogar is an electronic musician and multimedia/software designer based in Grado (Go), Italy. He operates in the field of electronic music and multimedia art, with a marked interest in natural sounds, spatialization and interactive systems. He has explored various approaches to sound generation, recording and production, the resulting compositions are often studies in transforming, mutating existing sounds. “Surface Studies” are a series of works focused on the study of surfaces. The microphone is used as a microscope, in order to catch the most intimate resonance, the most secret rustles, the essence of nature. Field recordings are metabolized, tranformed, distorted, decomposed. In “Sand” rich textures are extracted from sea sounds recorded on a small island located in the Grado lagoon. In “Streams” sounds of water and pebbles, recorded beneath the river Torre, are tranformed, distorted and mixed in real time with the sounds of the river Torre which are decomposed and pitch shifted using a sort of granular treatment.The sound objects thus generated are used to fill a sort of sound canvas so that the inner architecture of sounds, with its intimate time structures, becomes the controlling metaphor of the works.” – LABEL PRESS SHEET
