I’ve just read that EMI’s profits are down by 5%, but that they think
it will all be ok because they’ve got a Robbie Williams album out soon.
Here at The Presidential Palace we’re banking on a similar effect from
the new 7″ by The Loves, in the shops next week. To tell the truth (and
when have I ever lied to you?), we’ve got a bunch of great new records
out this month. As well as The Loves, we have the debut 7″ from
Fanfarlo (on green vinyl!), the cracking new double A-side single from
The Butterflies Of Love, and an excellent new album from Sodastream.
Details of all these records are below, along with some of the reviews
they’ve been getting and details on how to order direct from us.

A week next Friday on October 27th we’re back at The Buffalo Bar for
what promises to be another top-notch Beat Hotel. The line-up’s a bit
less indiepop than in recent months, but then if you want that kind of
stuff you’ll be paying £25 to see the originators of C86 The Magic
Numbers at the ICA won’t you? Yeah, I know, doesn’t make sense to me
either. Oh, and this gig’s an Oxjam show and we’re giving all the
profits away, so you can come along and nod your head to Brother
Francisco, The Sailplanes, Don’s Mobile Barbers and Ambulance safe in
the knowledge that you’re also buying a goat. Full details of this
below, as always.

There’s a bunch of other things to tell you too…

you about them yet, but they’re Dan Greene from The Butterflies Of
Love’s other band and they’re going to blow your mind. Oh yes!) have

Buffalo Bar, remember? Good-O.

AMBULANCE Liverpool’s Ambulance are a mixed bag of noise, pop,
theremins, French horns, folk, heavy rock and more. Their debut release
was the ‘I am a star, I am an angel’ 12″, which they followed with the
‘Ambulance ep’, containing their cult cover version of So Solid Crew’s
’21 seconds’. In August 2005, they released ‘Witchi Tai To’ on Sea
Records, a cover of Jim Pepper’s jazz version of an old native american
peyote chant previously been covered by Harper’s Bizarre, Future Pilot
aka, Jan Garbarek, BMX Bandits and many others. Ambulance’s treatment
has a touch of Wire’s ‘Outdoor Miner’ to it, and it’s stunningly good.
So good so that Playlouder.com awarded it single of the week. They’ve
had acclaim from NME, The Guardian, The Big Issue, Is This Music? and
Record Collector, and Arthur Baker, Ladytron, Steve Lamacq, Jane Gazzo
and Rob Da Bank are all fans. Dom from the band is also a member of the
excellent Static Waves. “I don’t think there is a more exciting band on
the planet” (Plan B) http://www.searecords.co.uk/artists-ambulance.htm

DON’S MOBILE BARBERS Don’s Mobile Barbers was formed by Mat and Rob in
late 2001 in a place called Birstall. They wrote some songs, recorded
some albums and played some gigs wherever they could. DMB have been
lucky enough to support such bands as The Shins, The Research, The Webb
Brothers, Centro-Matic, The Belles, Two Gallants, Brendan Benson,
Magoo, Herman Dune, The Silent League, and Death Cab For Cutie (+
others that they can’t remember). DMB’s set at the 2004 Summer Sundae
Weekender caught the attention of Steve Lamacq, who went on to play
them on his 6Music show and remark “The drummer plays drums and
keyboard at the same time and the singer plays guitar and keyboard, at
the same time. They’re great!”. Boom Times! is DMB’s third album in two
years, and it continues to mine a rich seam of fuzzily emotional pop in
the vein of Grandaddy, Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips with their minimal
arrangements creating a sound even more powerfully dynamic than that of
many larger bands. “Beautiful fragments of broken pop” (The Fly)

THE SAILPLANES Having toiled separately in lesser groups for some time,
noise guitarist Tim and songwriter Stacey formed The Sailplanes in
early 2005 through a mutual interest in bands such as Electrelane,
Sonic Youth and Sleater-Kinney. They write songs that aim to strip arty
rock to it’s basic components. Bass-less and brisk, The Sailplanes are
a breath of fresh air.  “Stark and scratchy, paranoid and jerky numbers
very much in thrall to early Sonic Youth” (Wears The Trousers)

BROTHER FRANCISCO Brother Francisco formed in late 2005 and feature
ex-members of Black Neilson, Vermont and Wintergreen. They’re a “guitar
trio”, and they play rock.  “Guitar heavy with a grungier sound akin to
a toned down Dinosaur Jr.” (Maps)

*** NEW RECORDS!! ***

Some brand spanking new records for you to order…

RESERVATIONS – SODASTREAM (CD ALBUM £10) The brilliant new album by the
Australian duo of Karl Smith and Pete Cohen, augmented here by a full
band. Darker in tone than their previous “A Minor Revival” album,
“Reservations” nevertheless has that mark of quality we’ve come to
expect from these guys, with Karl Smith’s amazing voice always a
highlight. For newcomers, think Low, Nick Drake and Will Oldham and
you’ll be halfway there.

“One of Australia’s best kept secrets, they are up there with the
Lucksmiths as one of the country’s finest contemporary exports, and I
guess it’s no surprise that there is something of the spirit of the
Go-Betweens intrinsic in their sound.” (Tangents)

TALKING BACKWARDS – FANFARLO (GREEN VINYL 7″ £2.50) The first release
from the wonderful Fanfarlo who’ve been making waves in London for a
while now. Led by 24 year old Swede Simon Aurell, this is a great,
driving pop single that anyone who loves The Arcade Fire will instantly
fall for. And it’s on green vinyl.

“Fanfarlo have a sound that would appeal to many Indiekid’s aesthetic;
there are echoes of Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Clap Your Hands Say
Yeah!… all the names the hipsters love to drop. There is also, however,
a flavour of great old New Zealand / Antipodean Pop, like Straitjacket
Fits, The Verlaines and The Chills, and if those references don’t get
you intrigued then you have no soul, or sense.” (Tangents)

ORBIT AROUND YOU/IN A BLIZZARD IN A LIGHTHOUSE – THE BUTTERFLIES OF
LOVE (7″ £2.50) The return of everyone’s favourite super-tall
Americans. A double A-side, the single couples the Jeff Greene-penned
AM radio hit “Orbit Around You” with Dan Greene’s woozy, psychedelic
“In A Blizzard In A Lighthouse”, a tasty combination that is sure to
whet the appetite for the album to come, “Famous Problems”.

“‘Orbit Around You’ is classic college rock, an updated take on REM
with just the right amount of growl in the voice to cut the sweetness
of the chorus. But my favourite of the pair is the brilliant ‘In A
Blizzard in a Lighthouse’. With its amazing Velvet Underground pulse
and askew psychedelic swirls, it’s an instant classic.” (SoundsXP)

XS AND OS/SHE’LL BREAK YOUR HEART… AGAIN – THE LOVES (4 SONG 7″ EP
£2.50) Two choice cuts from The Loves forthcoming “Technicolour” album,
the super poppy “Xs and Os” and a re-recorded “She’ll Break Your
Heart… Again” sounding absolutely massive. Plus two other exclusive
tracks, “My Sweet Drunken Blues” and an Os Mutantes cover. Bostin’!

“Look! Here come The Loves dressed in polka-dot glam with bubblegum
breath, spraying sugar sprinkles over your world with the lazily
rolling fuzz-pop sweetness of ‘Xs and Os’. A perfect pop collision
between The Archies and Marc Bolan that’ll have you seeing day-glo
stars for daze.” (Kittenpainting)

All three 7″s are limited to 500 copies, so be quick!
