November F-POP! Propaganda. Click For Infos.
Welcome to another slice of Fortuna POP! propaganda. Lies, lies and damn
lies. Well, apart from the new 7″s from Fanfarlo, The Loves and The
Butterflies Of Love and the excellent new album from Sodastream are all
out now and in the shops. We were chuffed to hear the Fanfarlo single
top the Rough Trade 7″s chart on Marc Riley’s 6music radio show. We
haven’t figured out what it means yet but there are only 500 of these
blighters and they’re on green vinyl, so snap one up while you can.
Meanwhile The Loves single’s been getting a lot of airplay from Huw
Stephens and Mark Radcliffe and they’re off to record a session for Huw
and Beth this weekend, so keep your ears peeled for that being
broadcast. If you happen to live in Wales. (think you can listen online
if you don’t) Details of all the new records and how to order them
direct from us are at the bottom of this e-mail.
We’ve just finalised the line-up for the next Beat Hotel at the Buffalo
Bar on Nov 24th and it’s another great bill with quality bands from top
to bottom: Tenlons Fort from Texas, USA fresh from their appearance on
the soundtrack to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days; Gold Sounds from Nottingham
featuring George from everyone’s favourite good time country rockers
The Grave Architects; The wonderful The Left Outsides, Mark and Alison
from Eighteenth Day Of May’s psych-folk duo; and the brilliant country
pop sounds of The Tailors from South London. All the details are below.
There’s a bunch of other things to tell you too…

THE TAILORS The Tailors are a South London collective led by and based
around the songs of Adam Killip. Mixing the outsider weirdness of bands
like the Silver Jews with the country-tinged powerpop of early Wilco or
Lemonheads, their music draws elements from folk, garage-rock and the
soulful pop of 70’s AM country radio. Their album Wakey Wakey is due
out on Trash Aesthetics in February. “An ace blend of Will Oldham and
Michael Nesmith, with its edgy tones and weirded-out lyrics, ensure
this is a narcotic necessity if you like slightly scruffy Americana.”

THE LEFT OUTSIDES Formed in Camberwell, London in Winter 2003, The Left
Outsides are Alison Cotton (vocals, viola, recorder, melodica) and Mark
Nicholas (vocals, guitar, bass, glockenspiel). The debut EP ‘Leaving
the Frozen Butterflies Behind’ was released on the ‘I wish I was
Unpopular’ label in January 2005. Mark is a former member of Of Arrowe
Hill, while Alison was previously a member of Saloon and played in (an
early version of) British Sea Power, as well as playing viola on
releases by bands such as Tompaulin, Comet Gain, Television
Personalities and Do Me Bad Things. She also plays in the band January.
“The Left Outsides are the sound of frost on overgrown abandoned train
tracks; of sepia tinted photographs and delicious nights in by the fire
with an old David Crosby song on the stereo… beautiful hipsters
crouching in the shadows of 1960’s loft parties, dreaming of a Pop
coloured gentle revolution” (Tangents) www.theleftoutsides.com

GOLD SOUNDS Gold Sounds have a long and illustrious history as
Nottingham’s ‘most frequently re-named band’. Now living and working in
London and with a name that points a subtle referential finger to their
musical heroes Pavement, Gold Sounds have played alongside some of the
great and gregarious; Editors, Simple Kid and indie heroes The Loft to
name but a few. “…when these four studious young believers get their
heads down and give us a tune as delightful as ‘Prints’ – think David
Gedge duetting with the Divine Comedy – they’re a joy to behold…”

TENLONS FORT Texan singer/songwriter Jack Gibson is the key element of
Tenlons Fort whose live performances, either solo acoustic or as
symphonic group, are emotional journeys that are beginning to reach
audiences across the U.S and Europe. Appearing here solo, Gibson’s
influences include Brian Wilson, Elliott Smith, Dolorean and Damien
Jurado. An album, “The Golden Handshake”, was released last year and a
track also featured on the soundtrack of Gus Van Sant’s film “Last
Days”. www.tenlonsfort.com www.myspace.com/tenlonsfortmusic

*** NEW RECORDS!! ***
Some brand spanking new records for you to order…
RESERVATIONS – SODASTREAM (CD ALBUM £10) The brilliant new album by the
Australian duo of Karl Smith and Pete Cohen, augmented here by a full
band. Darker in tone than their previous “A Minor Revival” album,
“Reservations” nevertheless has that mark of quality we’ve come to
expect from these guys, with Karl Smith’s amazing voice always a
highlight. For newcomers, think Low, Nick Drake and Will Oldham and
you’ll be halfway there.
“One of Australia’s best kept secrets, they are up there with the
Lucksmiths as one of the country’s finest contemporary exports, and I
guess it’s no surprise that there is something of the spirit of the
Go-Betweens intrinsic in their sound.” (Tangents)
TALKING BACKWARDS – FANFARLO (GREEN VINYL 7″ £2.50) The first release
from the wonderful Fanfarlo who’ve been making waves in London for a
while now. Led by 24 year old Swede Simon Aurell, this is a great,
driving pop single that anyone who loves The Arcade Fire will instantly
fall for. And it’s on green vinyl.
“Fanfarlo have a sound that would appeal to many Indiekid’s aesthetic;
there are echoes of Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Clap Your Hands Say
Yeah!… all the names the hipsters love to drop. There is also, however,
a flavour of great old New Zealand / Antipodean Pop, like Straitjacket
Fits, The Verlaines and The Chills, and if those references don’t get
you intrigued then you have no soul, or sense.” (Tangents)
ORBIT AROUND YOU/IN A BLIZZARD IN A LIGHTHOUSE – THE BUTTERFLIES OF
LOVE (7″ £2.50) The return of everyone’s favourite super-tall
Americans. A double A-side, the single couples the Jeff Greene-penned
AM radio hit “Orbit Around You” with Dan Greene’s woozy, psychedelic
“In A Blizzard In A Lighthouse”, a tasty combination that is sure to
whet the appetite for the album to come, “Famous Problems”.
“‘Orbit Around You’ is classic college rock, an updated take on REM
with just the right amount of growl in the voice to cut the sweetness
of the chorus. But my favourite of the pair is the brilliant ‘In A
Blizzard in a Lighthouse’. With its amazing Velvet Underground pulse
and askew psychedelic swirls, it’s an instant classic.” (SoundsXP)
XS AND OS/SHE’LL BREAK YOUR HEART… AGAIN – THE LOVES (4 SONG 7″ EP
£2.50) Two choice cuts from The Loves forthcoming “Technicolour” album,
the super poppy “Xs and Os” and a re-recorded “She’ll Break Your
Heart… Again” sounding absolutely massive. Plus two other exclusive
tracks, “My Sweet Drunken Blues” and an Os Mutantes cover. Bostin’!
Classic pop, classic classic pop, classic authentic 60’s pop (that does
not sound like it was made in Cardiff – it was, Cardiff is clearly the
new black this week) sounds like early Beach Boys and psychedelic
bubblegum and surf boards and harmonies and sing-along choruses and
doo-whoop blues and breezy breezy sunny catchy early sixties teenage
Americana in a cherry red 57 Chevy and maybe just the hint of a drop of
Velvet underground/Monkeys acid and just so right right right. Second
track sounds like it’s going to be Louie Louie Self preservation
Society until it turns in to some other brilliantly authentic/long lost
Kingmakers/Shangri La’s/Standelles treasure that the Brian Jonestown
Massacre would kill to make happen, far more pop than the BJM could
ever hope or indeed dare to be – classic classic. There’s an
undercurrent though, there’s maybe a little more acid in here then that
first listen had us believe, and a slight lo-fi edge of danger, a
little bit of dirt under those clean looking nails and smiles and pet
sounds and everything is so so right with this perfect little four
tracker – track three sounds like a stripped down early Stones thing,
fourth definitely is soaked in the finest Monkeys acid…. (Organ –
Single Of The Week)
All three 7″s are limited to 500 copies, so be quick!
