HANS APPELQVIST – Sifantin och mörkret
CD Häpna H.35
http://www.hapna.com
http://www.myspace.com/hansappelqvistnaima

“Me, a cuckoo. Of all the great things in Africa my eyes have met, one I can never forget. On the savannah a rhinoceros stood proudly, gazing into the distant. Its belly ripped open in battle with the one that always wants more.”

Hot on the heels of his last record Naima, released in November 2006, Hans Appelqvist has a new album ready. It’s called “Sifantin och mörkret” and is his third release on Häpna. The music shows Hans from a new side, the album being more open and spontaneous than previously. It oscillates between the sweet and grotesque, nice and ugly, harmony and terror, sifanti and darkness…

JODI CAVE – For Myria
CD 12k 1043
http://www.12k.com

On his CD debut, UK sound artist Jodi Cave creates seven short compositions united by themes of singularity and natural randomness. One of the most immediate features of For Myria is its restrained sound palette. Like an instrumentalist who has laid a small collection of choice instruments out in front of him, Cave creates beautifully intimate collages, each touching on maybe only 2 or 3 sounds, woven together by computer processing which has been pushed into the background, utilized more as a compositional aid than a sound source. With instruments such as harmonium, clarinet, and guitar, through field recordings, stones, and scraps of metal, Cave paints a most introspective music in blurred swatches of minimal color… The tones are musical, delicate, punctured by the scraping of close-mic’d found objects rattling across the stereo field.

Cave’s choice of instrumentation helps him create pieces that exist as singular objects, each ebbing and shuffling with accidental dynamics. There is a very tactile and earthy feel to his work as he lets the sounds take a natural course, influencing and sculpting them with his own studio techniques.

Who (or what) is “Myria?” It is not known, but Cave says… “It sounds yellow…”

Featured on 12k’s Blueprints compilation (12k1039, 2006), Jodi Cave was brought up outside of Sheffield playing the clarinet. His influences come from the art world via work from the likes of Yves Klein, Ad Reinhardt, and Agnes Martin. He strives to blend technology and and art in the most natural of ways.

LAST STEP – s/t
2LP/CD Planet Mu ZIQ149
http://www.planet-mu.com

After his debut EP “You’re a Nice Girl” (included here in its entirety on the CD format), and his appearance on the “Sacred Symbols Of Mu” compilation, Canada’s Last Step unleases his debut album called simply ‘Last Step’. These tracks are all created using original analogue equipment like the Roland 303, 606, 707 and Jupiter etc.

I (Mike Paradinas) do not know much about last step as he only communicates with me anonymously and via vocoder. All his royalties (if he ever makes a profit) are destined for the St. Bernadetta’s Synth Hospital. He’s listed his influences as The Carpenters, Giorgio Moroder, Drexciya, Phuture, Depeche Mode, Luke Vibert, Mozart, Jean Michel Jarre, Roland, The Human League, DMX Krew, Throbbing Gristle, Vav Jungle, Jeff Mills, Simon and Simon, 808 State & Glass Tiger.

MARHAUG | ASHEIM – Grand Mutation
CD Touch Tone 30
http://touchmusic.org.uk
http://lassemarhaug.no
http://www.nilshenrikasheim.no

LASSE MARHAUG: electronics
NILS HENRIK ASHEIM: organ

Lasse Marhaug and Nils Henrik Asheim started their collaboration in 2004 at the All Ears festival in Oslo, Norway. This turned out as a fruitful meeting between two musicians of very different backgrounds. Marhaug’s feedback to Asheim’s organ sounds in the Oslo concert started to reflect how the work was to develop. Asheim is working with half-stops and subtle playing techniques that create multiple layers of sound with a vibrating or fluctuating character, as well as with the power of the full organ. Marhaug’s tools belong to the world of sine wave oscillators and noise generators. The aim was to set a sonic frame into which they could both gradually tune.

The two musicians met again in June 2006 just before Oslo Cathedral (which contains Asheim’s favourite instrument) closed down for a few years of renovation work. One day of soundcheck and musical work and one night of recording produced an improvised flow of one hour, afterwards structured into five tracks.

The recording was made in a live setup on the organ loft. Nils Henrik Asheim was sitting at the organ console and Lasse Marhaug right behind, playing his electronics through a loudspeaker system in order to make the electronics and the acoustic organ sound blend as close to each other as possible. Sound engineer Thomas Hukkelberg used two custom-built condenser mics for the organ, two Shure KSM 44 for the electronics and two Neumann U87 by the altar for the ambience. He used a Millennia Media HV-3 preamp and an Apogee AD-16X converter. The recordings were made at night to avoid unwanted ambient city sounds. The final mix was made by Marhaug in January 2007.

NEIL LANDSTRUMM – Restaurant Of Assassins
2LP/CD Planet Mu ZIQ174
http://www.planet-mu.com
http://www.myspace.com/neillandstrumm

A stalwart of the UK electronic music scene since 1994 Neil Landstrumm has released work on many of the most recognised labels in the industry. Starting with Peacefrog, shifting gears to Berlin’s Tresor Records he then upped the bass-game onto arguably the UK’s most important electronic label of the moment, Planet Mu. Neil Landstrumm is an artist who always seems to be at the spearhead of experimental, dancehall low frequency electronics. After a lengthy sabbatical in New York, the native Scot is now settled back in Edinburgh where he continues to make music and operate his label project, Scandinavia. Neil has toured relentlessly worldwide, supporting each year’s releases with uncompromising live shows using a plethora of sound hardware. Never an artist to rest on his laurels and churn out the same old, he has built a career on being unpredictable and open to new perspectives from which to hone his sound. A pioneer of new styles within techno, often copied and imitated Landstrumm has a strong pedigree within the scene. Unaligned to any one genre, upfront and heavy, he makes music for all-comers to the rave. Landstrumm steers his way through 2007 with
refreshing abandon and a new LP due late Spring on Planet Mu records called “Restaurant of Assassins.”

With the heaviest subs this side of Chapeltown, Landstrumm seeks new lows with “Restaurant of Assasins” bringing together classic UK techno vibes and modern dubstep with a refreshed rave sensibility. Neil hijacks dubstep structure and its “on-the-three’s” approach but adapts it to his signature sound so identifiable from the decades previous productions. Undeniably proud of the UK’s heritage in electronic music and clearly passionate about the influences in his musical ouput, Landstrumm has a talent for bringing it all together in unusual and creative packages. Chasing the Great Northern Raves from the Happy Mondays and Yorkshire Bass N Bleep scene, to contemporary dubstep you can follow  Landstrumm’s vision of the ravestep sound in 2007 with “Restaurant of Assassins.” An unsettling cartel of badman and plain wrong-uns…

SICKBOY – Musical Therapy
CD Very Friendly VF033
http://www.myspace.com/milkplussickboy

Very Friendly, Lowlands and Wood Records are proud to present the long awaited third album by Belgium’s biggest breakcore artist Sickboy Milkplus.

With a unique and fresh sound, this 8 track album doesn’t fail to sur© pirise you with its efforts to combine fun and raw breaks. Some say this isn’t the usual Sickboy we can expect – others say you can expect anything from Sickboy – but what he did on this album is taken all his musical influences and simply made a difference that leaves you feeling of warmth and bass. It sounds like a very personal album.

Remarkably are the countless synthesised landscape feel atmospheres that overule the overall sample based work of Sickboy. If one thing stands out on the album is its wicked programmation, variation and innovation. It almost doesn’t sound like laptpop music anymore and yet this album truely sounds like a breakcore record that you’ve never heard before.
