Recorded 2006, Berlin
Mastered at Piethopraxis, Köln October 2007

Story and drawings by Ilpo Väisänen
Layout by SOMA

Angel is ILPO VÄISÄNEN (Pan sonic), HILDUR
GUDNADOTTIR (Lost In Hildurness) and DIRK
DRESSELHAUS (Schneider TM). ‘Kalmukia’ is a vast
epic, sprawling through guitar riffs spanning
deep electronic canyons overlooked by a
melocholic grey sky. A journey leading to
discovery and a final mutation. All players
delicately playing off each other creating a
mesmerising work that sounds like nothing they
have done before yet still retaining the audio
signatures they have become known for.

Packaged in a notebook style sleeve.

FELIX KUBIN UND DAS MINERALORCHESTER – Music For Theatre and Radio Play
LP/CD Dekorder 022
Streetdate: January 21
http://www.dekorder.de
http://www.myspace.com/fkubin

We are extremely excited to announce the 1st
collaboration between the Dekorder label and our
old friend, local conspirator and private hair
gardener Felix Kubin.

Kubin has achieved world wide reputation by
releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced
Organ&Korg smash hits on his own Gagarin label,
on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono et al. He has
collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark
Boombastik, Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales,
David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz, Boris D. Hegenbart,
Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first
recordings date back to his teenage years in the
early 1980’s, followed by his electroacoustic
noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist
Liedertafel Margot Honecker.

Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and
recorded music for films (hence the title of his
first album) by the likes of Mariola Brillowska
and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues the German
tradition of “Hörspiel” (radio play) with works
such as “Territerrortorium”, “Nachtspeicher”,
“Orpheus’ Psykotron” and “Syndikat für Gegenlärm”
(with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics
and Wolfgang Müller of Die Tödliche Doris).

Some of Kubin’s most gorgeous and adventurous
works are his contributions to “The Raft” (a
radio play by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The
Homosexuals, directed by Lukas Simonis of
Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his
soundtracks for theatre plays by Branko Simic
(“Zufall”, based on a short story by Vladimir
Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun. The
latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene
Zitronen) directed “Hollywood Elegien” based on a
song cycle by Bert Brecht and Hanns Eisler. Now
the best parts of these works are for the first
time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly)
titled “Music for Theatre and Radio Play”.

While the musical spectrum on this release covers
a variety of styles and moods it’s still almost
immediately recognisable as a typically Kubin-ist
work featuring the main ingredients his records
and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous
for. Twisted rythms & playfully clever
arrangements that could have been created by a
mutated reincarnation of the legendary Juan
Esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding
like a narcoleptic John Carpenter playing Angelo
Badalamenti arrangements; contorted Big Band
music, pre-war Schlager and Vaudeville sent
through a malfunctioning pre-digital time
machine; Ennio Morricone cloned as a Russian male
choir; instrumental workers’ songs Hanns Eisler
might have imagined in a feverish nightmare –
it’s all there, and more!

Record release parties:
Felix Kubin plus special guests Kuupuu, Black To Comm & Aosuke
17. Januar – Hamburg, Hafenklang
19. Januar – Berlin, West Germany

GERT-JAN PRINS – Break Before Make Format
CD, Edition of 500 Editions Mego DeMEGO 002
Release Date: January 4
http://www.editionsmego.com

Gert-Jan Prins: electronics, timpani, voice.
Recorded at the Prins Studio, Amsterdam, NL, 2007
Mastered at Piethopraxis, Köln.
Artwork: Tina Frank

Another bulletin of customised electronics from
this Dutch master. ‘Make Before Break’, like its
predecessor ‘Risk’ investigates the sonic
possiblities to be found in electronic devices
and circuits. However this is no noodling
experimental stuff but an compact set of finely
crafted sonics. Short, sharp shocks with a bit of
timpani thrown in.

HAN BENNINK & TERRIE EX – Zeng!
CD Terp Records Terp IS-13
http://www.terprecords.nl

Zeng! is the second duo-CD of drummer Han Bennink
and guitar-player Terrie Ex. It contains nine
improvisations, recorded at the Jottem Studio in
Wormerveer, Holland. The pieces are wild and
sweet, manic and relaxed, sonic and swinging,
obnoxious and together. A story between two
friends who don’t make it too easy for each other!

One of the worlds most renowned free
improvisation drummers, HAN BENNINK just turned
65, made hundreds of CD’s and played about 6,000
concerts all over the planet. In his twenties he
was already famous and accompanied touring
American jazz stars, including Sonny Rollins, Ben
Webster, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Griffin, Eric
Dolphy, and Dexter Gordon. At the same time,
Bennink participated in the creation of the
unique European free-improvised music. He
co-founded the infamous, still going, musicians
collective Instant Composers Pool in 1967. A
conspicuous feature of Bennink’s musical life
since the 1960s are the spontaneous duo concerts
and recordings with musicians of many
nationalities and musical inclinations.

TERRIE EX is one of the founding members of
multi-free-impro-punkband The Ex, who, after
almost 28 years still go strong. Over the years
he developed his own distinctive guitar-style.
It’s more about sound, tension, rhythm and
improvisation, then about chords, harmonies, or
fast licks. He did many duo-concerts at different
jazz-festivals in Europe and America. A.o. with
Paul Lovens, Jaap Blonk, Ab Baars, Steve
Beresford, Xavier Charles, etc. And about 25 gigs
with Han Bennink. Zeng! is his fourth duo-CD on
his own Terp label.

Zeng! was recorded October 17, 2007 by Jeroen
Visser at Jottem, Wormerveer, Netherlands. Mixed
and mastered by Jeroen Visser at Fishing Bakery
Labs in Zürich, Switzerland.

KAZUMASA HASHIMOTO – Euphoriam
CD Noble CXCA-1222
http://www.noble-label.net
http://home.att.ne.jp/star/bd/

noble, the label that brings “music for everyday
life” will top off 2007 with the new album
“Euphorium” by the magical alchemist of sound,
Kazumasa Hashimoto. This will be the first album
since Hashimoto’s previous album released 1 year
and 9 months ago.

With a delicate combination of academic musical
theory and unrivaled creativity, Kazumasa
Hashimoto has been applauded all over the world
for the deep and warm music like a “blissful
honeymoon between classic and electronic music.”
The newest album “Tiny People Singing Over the
Rainbow”, by label mate Gutevolk and produced by
hashimoto is also a piece of work that is
showered with the magical talent of the artist.
Hashimoto also enchanted the crowd from around
the world in June in Barcelona at Europe’s
largest electronic music and multi-media art
festival, the Sonar festival.

In the new album titled “Euphorium”, Hashimoto
plays and produces most of the instruments in the
album from the piano, guitar, bass to drums
accompanied by several guest artists playing
violin and cello. The new album features more
vocal tracks including M-5, featuring Gutevolk.
The pop melodies and the elegant and
sophisticated arrangement of the tracks create a
beautiful and breathtaking harmony that blend
magically to create a kaleidoscope of sound.

A sorcery of sound will lure listeners into a
world of dreams. The newest album “Euphorium”
skillfully portrays undeniable happiness and the
shadows that lurk behind that paradise to prove
that artist kazumasa hashimoto, has stepped
beyond borders of electronica and soft rock to
create a new universal monument of pop music that
is new yet nostalgic at the same time.

kazumasa hashimoto biography:
Composer / pianist born in Tokyo.
Learning piano at a young age, Kazumasa Hashimoto
quickly took an interest in composing rather than
playing standard classical pieces. At the same
time also took an interest in making music with
computers. Then he graduated from a College of
Music in Tokyo with a major in song writing.
Releasing 3 albums worldwide to great critical
acclaim, his work has been introduced in many
different avenues, most notably receiving the 5
star award from Germany’s De:Bug magazine and
having his work used on a BBC TV show. He has
also collaborated with like minded artists such
as World’s End Girlfriend and Shione Yukawa.
Further he has expanded his work to include the
production of other artists. On the live end, he
took part in Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “code” and shared
the bill with veterans such as SketchShow in
October 03. In April 05 he successfully completed
a Pan Asia tour of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau
and in 2007 he took part in the largest European
electronic music festival hosted in Barcelona,
Sonar.

M.B + E.D.A – Regolelettroniche
CD Baskaru karu:8
Vertrieb: A-Musik
http://www.baskaru.com
http://www.myspace.com/mauriziobianchi

The rules of droning

Italians MAURIZIO BIANCHI and EMANUELA DE ANGELIS
have a generation between them, but that does not
prevent them from delivering their first
collaboration entitled Regolelettroniche.
However, to get there, they had to agree on a few
rules, alluded to in titles such as “Earthly
Principle” and “Cosmic Norms”, and through these
rulelectronics credited to both of them. That
being said, these rules are left unexplained;
listeners can discover them on their own when
they experience this drone-based music: soft,
quiet, seemingly reiterative yet clearly
transformative.

Born in 1955, Maurizio Bianchi is one of the
unique figures on the Italian avant-garde scene.
Musically active since 1979, using electronics
since 1980, he was among the pioneers of the
cassette underground, rivalling Merzbow in
creativity and sheer volume of production. Then,
in 1984, he suddenly ceased all activity for
religious reasons. He made his comeback in 1997
and, since then, the experimental music microcosm
has been flooded with his releases, from new
projects to reissues, plus numerous
collaborations with people such as Aube,
Frequency in Cycles per Second, Jozef van Wissem
and NIMH.

Twenty years younger than Bianchi, Emanuela De
Angelis made her musical debut in 1994 as the
lead singer and guitarist of the noise band Joyce
Whore Not. She was a guest on Tu Míís first
record, and later co-founded Mou, Lips! with
Andrea Gabriele. She launched her solo career in
2004 with a contribution to the compilation album
Sonic Scope 04 :: The Portable Edition (Grain of
Sound, co-curated by Baskaru). She appears on a
number of compilations and web-based
collaborations from 8bitrecs, Highpoint Lowlife,
and Postdisco.

Regolelettroniche sees Maurizio and Emanuela
combine loops, waves, drones and electronics into
a ìsystematic sonorous assemblage for electronic
instruments, axiomatic waves and essential
reverberationsî. The resulting music engulfs the
listener into a soundworld where chaos organizes
itself between the ears.

Regolelettroniche is being released by the French
label Baskaru. Baskaruís previous releases (by
Lawrence English, ENT, Urkuma, (etre), and
GoGooo) have established uncanny artistic and
visual standards, by which this new opus fully
abides.

NEMETH – Film
CD Thrill Jockey THRILL194
Streetdate: February 1
http://www.thrilljockey.com

Film is the first solo album by STEFAN NEMETH,
member of RADIAN and LOKAI and the co-founder of
MOSZ Records. The album developed out of his
years of work creating soundscapes for
experimental filmakers and installation artists,
but it was only after years of creating this work
that he had he idea to repurpose it for an album
under his own name.

Since around 2001, Stefan Németh has been working
with the creators of short films and experimental
videos, most intended for special film festival
programs. He had long considered releasing music
as a solo artist, and eventually Németh realized
that the music he was making for those films was
just what he wanted to be making as a solo
musician, but just putting the music on a CD
would not have been the proper way to do it. When
these pieces were created, Németh was working on
a variety of projects, each of them with its own
life and intent, always with the music being
created to serve the movie, as opposed to
creating a single album where his process could
have been more linear. His idea for Film was to
take this material and re-structure and develop
these soundtracks into autonomous pieces of
music, while keeping the cinematic spirit alive.

The consquence of his method is a range of
evolutionary levels between the different tracks,
between some that are very similar to the
versions used in the various film projects, to
those that have been more heavily repurposed or
were not used in the final versions of the
original projects. For instance, “Field” was
based on the sound design Németh created for the
architectural film Domino. He had Martin
Brandlmayr (Radian, Trapist) add drums to his
original rough sketches, to which Stefan further
added guitars, synthesizers and percussion.
Meanwhile, “Luukkaankangas” and “Soprus” are
basically identical to the original versions in
the films and even retain the titles of those
films. “Transitions” was wriitten as the main
theme for “Ortem,” but in the end was supplanted
by something more abstract. “Via L4-Norte” is the
soundtrack to a film of Németh’s own, still under
construction, about the utpopian ideals at work
in Brasilia and how the reality there compares to
the rest of Brazil.

Technically, Film is a blend of electronic sounds
and acoustic instruments where it is often
difficult to distinguish between real and
generated sounds, and similarly combines free and
conventional forms. The electronics function just
as any other instrument, and are almost solely
analogue synths. There are digitally generated
sounds, but only from genuinely digital
processes, and not replicas or recreations of the
analogue world.

OSSO EXOTICO + Z’EV – s/t
CD Crouton No.39
http://www.croutonmusic.com
http://ossoexotico.planetaclix.pt
http://www.myspace.com/rhythmajik

Since 1989, the Portugal avant garde ensemble
Osso Exótico have created a stunning body of
work. Current members are André Maranha, David
Maranha and Patricia Machás, but besides the
recordings, very little historical information
can be found about the group. Rather, the music
speaks for itself. Percussionist Z’EV, who has
spent the better part of 40 years finding ways to
coax sound out of material, and then creating a
mystic cacaphony out of it, also uses sound as
communication. Together, this grouping produces
quite a statement, as sound becomes something
unexplained by words, yet shared as an
experience. Here, long stretches of rhythmic and
bubbling organ are matched by large bass drum
patterns that culminate in an expansive
psychedelic pool of sound. This isn’t glassine
drone music. It spews the grit of Tony Conrad and
the trance of Terry Riley, while radiating the
experience of a sweat lodge in a behemoth
explosion of tribal minimalism; only digressing
for a segment of spatial hums and large
frequencies rubbed from the surfaces of metal,
before it dives back into oblivion. With no sound
processing, the result is a highly natural,
grossly enigmatic, and deeply energized
recording. The power is yours for the taking.

Released in an edition of 500 and packaged in an
offset printed chipboard envelope.

About OSSO EXOTICO:
Osso Exótico formed in 1989. Over time, its
members included ANDRÈ MARANHA, ANTÒNIO FORTE,
BERNARDO DEVLIN, DAVID MARANHA, PATRICIA Machás,
and FRANCISCO TROPA. Utilizing a diverse range of
instruments such as glass harmonica, piano
strings, hammond organ, mandolin, violin, and
many others, the ensemble created and brought to
life scored music that appears on eight
recordings, titled, I – VIII.

About Z’EV:
Conceptual artist, dancer, musician, scholar and
poet, STEFAN WEISSER began playing the drums at
age 4. Moving to New York City from San Francisco
in 1979, and adopting the name Z’EV, his work
with performance/noise percussion broke new
ground and drew the attention of rock symphonist
Glenn Branca, dancer Simone Forti, guitarist
Rudolph Grey and just about everybody related to
the downtown scene. in the early 1970s, he
developed a personal technique utilizing
self-developed instruments formed from industrial
materials such as stainless steel, titanium, and
PVC plastics. Initially these instruments were
assemblages of these materials with a
movement-based performance style that was a form
of marionette (although with the performer
visible). He has since come to refer to this
performance mode as ‘wild-style’, a term
originally related to graffiti. Since 1984, he
has been concentrating on performing in a more
traditional mallet-percussion style, albeit with
highly idiosyncratic and ‘extended’ mallet
percussion techniques and his ‘self-made’/adapted
instruments. His recordings have been released by
labels such as Touch, Tzadik, Die Stadt, and many
others.

ROBERT ASHLEY – Tap Dancing In the Sand
Artists: Robert Ashley with ENSEMBLE MAE
CD Unsounds 15U
http://www.unsounds.com
http://www.robertashley.org

A rare and long awaited CD of instrumental works
by the great American musical pioneer Robert
Ashley, performed by the Amsterdam based Ensemble
MAE. Ashley has worked closely with Ensemble MAE
on several projects, and has written two pieces,
“Tap Dancing in the Sand” and “Hidden
Similarities” for the ensemble. Presented on this
CD is a slice of his music spanning his entire
career, from the sonic explorations in open form
of in memoriam Estoban Gomez, to the melodic
clarity of Outcome Inevitable and the text based
music that he is well known for in the new pieces
“Tap Dancing in the Sand” and “Hidden
Similarities”. Ashley himself appears on the
title track.

ROBERT ASHLEY (b.1930), a distinguished figure in
American contemporary music, holds an
international reputation for his work in new
forms of opera and multi-disciplinary projects.
His recorded works are acknowledged classics of
language in a musical setting; his operatic works

‘Skylla’ is a monster. A sheering, scathing
collision of computer generated sounds meshed
with guitar and turntable. The results are
intense yet bearable, funny but not stupid. From
the rhythmical excesses of ‘Pink Umbrella’ and
‘Kirre’ to the subtle dronescape of ‘Syne’, this
is a full on experience.

A long awaited collaboration between these long
time associates of Viennese subculture; Silvia in
various curatorial roles and Billy as video
artist. ‘Skylla’ is their debut album.

Lyrics by Attila Csihar

Room recording at TEAM Gallery, NYC 10th, 11th & 12th June 2007
Vocals recorded at Château Csihar, Budapest June 2007
Engineered by Randall Dunn

Art by Banks Violette
Gallery photos by Seldon Hunt, SOMA portrait by Jan Bauer
Design by SOMA

Produced for Banks Violette exhibitions at
Barbara Gladstone & TEAM Galleries, NYC 28th June
– 17th August 2007.

6°Fskyquake is an audio composition designed in
2001 but explored conjunction with the american
sculptor Banks Violette’s solo shows in summer
2007. Actually, two shows at two different
galleries, Barbara Gladstone & Team, running
simultaneously for the duration. The interaction
of sound and Violette’s work revisited concepts
touched in prior collaboration of loss, absence,
residual energy of a missed evocative experience.

The composition was captured at a recording
session during the installation process in Team
gallery, and later transfered to Gladstone as
recorded playback in the public. Designed for 3
separate systems consisting of powered 18″
subwoofers and PA tops, the composition runs a
total of 8 hours and 35 minutes.

This room recording represents a possible stereo
interpretation of a portion of that work. The
fifth collaboration between Stephen O’Malley &
Banks Violette circulated amongst the main theme
of sound as physical presence. Sound pressure in
substantial space, relative dimension between
concrete & perceptual mass, gravity induced by
heightened sonic action and standing sub bass
pressure. The contribution of lyrics, text &
vocals by Attila Csihar inspired by his journeys
inside imperial Tokyo bring emotive & meditative
identity to the otherwise purely structural
composition. For this we shall be blessed.

The ghost of presence subsists across physical
space, the finite, the shadow of mass via
memories. What once was.
