Discus Records is pleased to release Discus 36CD, Life Echoes, Mick Beck’s solo album. It contains 13 tracks, 7 featuring tenor sax, 5 bassoon, and 1 a variety of whistles.
Mick Beck said: “I’ve been thinking about releasing a solo album for a long time. I have mixed feelings about such albums, as for me improvised music draws so much of its energy from the interaction of different musicians working together. But I’ve also wanted to find out what would happen when I set myself up in a studio with some thoughts about themes or approaches to pieces that I would like to explore. Life Echoes is the result of following that process. It is more reflective than my usual live performances as a soloist, and the studio environment obviously encourages the exploration of some of the quieter or semi-private moments of interaction with my instruments.
Most of the tracks are pure improvisations, but there are 4 compositions, two by me, and two by musicians who inspired me to play in the first place.
Sheffield has been my main base for the last 25 years, and the images and whole album echo my life’s experiences in that time.”
