Spring 2006 season of productions
forma is one of Europe’s leading production agencies for innovative, genre-defying art. Working with artists, venues and festivals worldwide, forma produces, publishes and tours a programme of groundbreaking new hybrids of music, new media, visual art, film, dance and performance
The Spring season of productions features exhibitions and extensive international touring activity for early 2006.
Highlights include:
· long awaited UK appearances from leading Japanese composer | artist Ryoji Ikeda including a world premiere of a new audiovisual piece at the Sage Gateshead, UK, as part of the AV festival 06, and a double bill performance at the Barbican in London of formula & C4I
· rare UK performance plus an Australian tour from the pioneering Berlin-based electronic composer alva noto [aka Carsten Nicolai]
· presentations of Ikeda’s installation spectra II in Bristol, UK
· UK premiere of Australian artist Lynette Wallworth’s installation work in Bristol, UK

This Secret Location exhibition | InBetween Time Festival | Arnolfini, Bristol, UK
Ryoji Ikeda’s spectra II & Lynette Wallworth’s Still:Waiting2 are presented as part of the InBetween Time Festival in an exhibition that takes over Arnolfini’s galleries and behind the scenes spaces to showcase extraordinary works in which the real and the virtual converge.
Leading installation and video artist Lynette Wallworth creates gently immersive environments which offer a tactile gateway. Still:Waiting2 is a video installation work that directs visitors sonically through the space. Filmed in an eerie twilight in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia, the video footage shows the dramatic movement of large flocks of Corellas, amplified through a surround sound-scape, to create an intimate and powerful visual experience of the arrival of thousands of birds. Visitors must negotiate the installation space in order to activate sensors that will fully reveal the imagery of the piece.
Wallworth has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and recently presented her first installation project in the States at The Davis Museum, Massachusetts.
forma is producing the first UK and European exhibition projects by Wallworth, beginning with Still:Waiting2 at Arnolfini.
Japan’s leading electronic composer/artist, Ryoji Ikeda, focuses on the minutiae of ultrasonics, frequencies and the essential characteristics of sound itself. Music, time and space are shaped by mathematical methods as Ikeda explores sound as sensation, pulling apart its physical properties to reveal its relationship with human perception and architectural space.
spectra II invites visitors to navigate their way through a narrow covered corridor – almost invisible due to its intense darkness/brightness and inaudible due to its ultra-frequencies – by listening to the sounds they trigger in the space.
forma continues to work with Ikeda to produce and tour new and existing work within the UK and internationally.

An exhibition conceived and realised by Mathieu Copeland
Soundtrack for an Exhibition is a project that confounds our expectations of an exhibition. It comprises a specially commissioned sound score whose nature is revealed through its encounters with different environments over time. The sound piece, composed by Susan Stenger and featuring contributions from a stellar list of international musicians, employs an archetypal pop song structure “exploded” in form to last 96 days. The soundtrack is audible throughout the gallery both inside and outside. During this period both a feature film [screened not in its final edited version, but as the entire footage shot in its making] and an exhibition of paintings [including Steven Parrino’s ‘Slow Rot’ & several large scale new commissions by John Armleder] will be shown in the gallery. It is in the confrontation of these elements with the soundtrack and with each other that the exhibition in defined, not as a singular experience but as a score evolving over time.
Whilst the soundtrack lasts 96 days, the film and paintings are presented for only part of this period (69 days), thus the sound piece exists and evolves as a soundtrack for an exhibition, a film, and an empty space.

Forma is producing a publication ‘Soundtrack for an Exhibition’ to coincide with this project that will include essays from Mathieu Copeland, plus discussions with participating artists John Armleder & Susan Stenger, and guest contributors including Tony Conrad, Gustav Metzger & Edwin Pouncey.
A DVD presenting selected excerpts from the soundtrack will accompany this publication.

The Opening Gala of AV06 features forma productions from two giants of electronica, alva noto [Carsten Nicolai] and Ryoji Ikeda. The evening presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned hyper-intense audio-visual work by Ikeda and a performance of the powerful and hypnotic C4I, plus a stunning live performance from alva noto.

Forma continues to work with Ryoji Ikeda to tour his stunning audiovisual works C4I and formula, plus an exciting new commission produced in collaboration with GRM, Paris.

Berlin based sound artist and producer Carsten Nicolai [alva noto] has established himself as a leading member in the realm of electronic sound and visual designers, using art and music as hybrid tools to create microscopic views of creative processes. Combining pared-down electronic sounds with the rhythmic groove of hip hop and R&B and his now legendary live synaesthesic video, noto’s works captivate consistently through a mixture of elegance, simplicity and cool technicism.
From early 2006 forma will manage and produce alva noto’s international touring activity.
