Table of the Elements launches its new rock imprint Radium with a bang. Jonathan Kane’s rollicking, majestic and critically-acclaimed debut February set you up with his lustrous, deep-grooved sound; now comes the bare-knuckled knock-out punch. On the opening track, BQE, kane compliments his signature wall of guitars with the high-lonesome serenade of pedal steel, then puts that pedal to the metal and barrels through the psychedelic badlands of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s classic I Looked at the Sun. Add the Dixie-fried strut of ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons to Glenn Branca’s guitar armies and you’re still only halfway to kane’s mind-blowing reinvention of both minimalism and the blues Ñ it’s a blistering day’s drive from anything you’ve heard before.

Running Time: 50:25. ‘Arnold dreyblatt is a minimalist who never forgot that music is still the human mating call. Anyone who has experienced the composer’s recordings with his marvelously-dubbed Orchestra of Excited Strings knows how madly dreyblatt’s pieces swing. They flaunt time as precisely as a Swiss watch. Indeed, music like this can put you in the mind of the whirring cogs and pulleys of some small mechanized device. Everything’s moving, twitching about, a bunch of individual sounds racheting up and down in a modulated relationship to all the other individual sounds. This animated playfulness exudes a real charm. Springy rhythms dance with each other, as clipped percussion and purposefully bowed strings generate delightful harmonic chatter. This live CD celebrates the 25th anniversary of dreyblatt’s historic concert at Federal Hall in New York (site of George Washington’s Presidential inauguration). Utilizing the natural resonances of the structure’s spectacular dome, dreyblatt and company romp through seven outstanding pieces for just-intoned double basses, piano, hurdy gurdy and pipe organ, emphasizing dynamics and sonorities to stunning acoustical effect.’

CALE, JOHN
New York in the 60s
Three CDs in black-lacquered wood box with libretto, bonus tracks and more. John Cale’s great credit, both inside and outside the Velvet Underground, was to have found the inoculation dosage that would addict the music industry to SOUND without alienating one world from the other. But outside the official VU there was also an uncut version of the virus, incubated behind the slum walls of the 1960s Lower East Side, and maintained live in the liquid nitrogen of these insolently recorded reel-to-reel audiotapes, recorded and produced by Tony Conrad and now available in the massive Table of the Elements 3XCD boxed set, New York in the 1960s. Recordings in the set originally released on TOE CD 46, 47, 75, 79, 80. Ristampa in unico “lussuoso” cofanetto dei tre CD a suo tempo usciti separatamente.

LENDORMIN
Night Dawn Day
Lendormin e’ un duo di musicisti/agitatori (Cristiano Luciani e Maurizio Maurizi) che opera prevalentemente in ambito improvvisativo. Questo CDR dalla bella confezione (in custodia DVD) ce li propone in tre “ambientazioni” sonoro/temporali, affiancati da diversi collaboratori, nella costruzione di una sorta di omaggio musicale all’arte cinematografica di George Romero (di cui i due Lendormin sono evidentemente appassionati esegeti). In “Night” (due tracce) la tromba di DBPIT (acronimo che nasconde il più prosaico Flavio Rivabella) interseca, esalta, nasconde le scariche elettriche prodotte dai due Lendormin (normalmente alle prese con chitarre, percussioni ed elettronica variegata assai) donandogli un carattere quietamente ossessivo. “Dawn” è la sezione (composta da 8 tracce) piu’ chiaramente “organizzata” data anche la formazione tradizionale in cui al nostro duo si associa l’altro duo ” di compari” Larsen Lombriki (basso e sinth). I 4 creano un incandescente scenario post-jazz, molto vicino a certi assalti sonori tipo Massacre o a formazioni di zorniana memoria. Gli strumenti sono in bella evidenza e il risultato è calorico al punto giusto. La terza e ultima “pala” del trittico romeriano ci dovrebbe riportare al giorno. “Day” è infatti il titolo e vede i due Lendormin affincati dal “nostro” Luca Miti al pianoforte. Di fatto si tratta però di un giorno abbastanza oscuro anch’esso, certamente romeriano nelle suggestioni e pervaso da un afflato rumoristico niente male. Alle prese con la materia grezza e in mancanza di linee guida, i tre se la giocano bene, con la batteria di Luciani in buona evidenza e le chitarre di Maurizi destrutturate al massimo, in costante “dibattito” con il pianoforte free di Miti. PAOLO BOSCHI / DEBORAH PENZO
Ignita Aura
Recentemente vi abbiamo presentato il nuovo lavoro di un gruppo aperto di improvvisatori, i DEK, giunti ad una apprezzata seconda produzione audio. Questa volta due dei molti musicisti impegnati in quel progetto ci propongono la loro personale visione musicale, in un lavoro “di coppia” (col violino di Deborah Penzo e le chitarre, synth, theremin ecc di Paolo Boschi) altrettanto riuscito. Si tratta ancora di improvvisazione, di matrice contemporanea (soprattutto per le linee molto “chiare” ed evidenti che descrivono il violino della Penzo e l’elettronica di Boschi) e di aspetto molto quieto, diremmo quasi “classico”. E’ assente quella sorta di “acrimonia” sonora che troviamo nelle espressioni improvvisative più radicali, ed è presente al suo posto un’attenzione per il gesto, per l’eco, per il rimando. Vi si descrive un paesaggio sonoro “orizzontale”, costellato dai flussi periodici dei synth, mentre violini e chitarre appaiono a graffiare la superficie di questa sorta di lungo “piano sequenza” acustico. Rimandi e ricordi di altre musiche, di motivi tradizionali, di melodie, di brevi temi, affiorano e si alternano in una carrellata molto suggestiva. Da ascoltare!!
